What is Positive Discipline?

The approach that TCS Co-op takes toward the social-emotional development of students is based on the Positive Discipline model developed by Dr. Jane Nelson. The teachers at TCS Co-op have been trained in the use of this model and it informs their daily interactions with students. Teachers foster relationships with each child based on mutual respect. Student cooperation is not forced or coerced using reward and punishment as in more conventional educational settings. The goal is for children to be driven by internal, not external, motivators. With this method, children’s intrinsic motivation is preserved and their natural desires to learn, to develop skills, and to contribute positively to their environment are encouraged. The teachers provide support tailored to the developmental level and natural gifts of each individual child.

Positive Discipline emphasizes children’s long-term development, helping children to gain life-long communication and relationship skills, become active problem solvers, and develop confidence and autonomy. This model greatly reduces conflict in the classroom (and at home), and provides students with the skills to handle conflict when it arises. Teachers at TCS Co-op continue to receive supervision and training in the Positive Discipline model. Parents also have opportunities to learn the model for use at home, through parent-teacher conferences and workshops offered by Dr. Jason Rodker and Laura Soulages, both Certified Positive Discipline Parent Educators.
